The term "digital economy" was first introduced as a distinct
concept by Don Tapcott in his 1995 publication, "The Digital Economy: Promises
and Perils in the Age of Networked Intelligence." This publication defined the key
components of the digital economy: fundamental innovations (semiconductors,
processors), underlying technologies (computers), and connecting
infrastructures (the internet and telecommunications networks).
