This article examines differences in the economic development of
Uzbekistan’s regions using official data for 2025 and the first half of 2026. It
distinguishes gross regional product (GRP), which measures economic scale, from real
growth rates. Tashkent city leads in both output volume and growth in the periods
considered, while several regions recorded rapid growth from a smaller base. The
article argues that aggregate GRP should be complemented by per capita output,
employment, productivity, and income indicators. It proposes a place-sensitive regional
policy focused on local strengths, value chains, human capital, and transport and digital
connectivity.
