Agglomerations - dense metropolitan areas and urban clusters–play a crucial role
in the transition toward a green economy. This paper evaluates the impact of agglomerations on
green economic development through three key indicators: CO₂ emissions, green employment, and
energy intensity. Based on analyses of data from the World Bank, OECD, UN-Habitat, peerreviewed scientific studies, and global statistical databases, the findings reveal that while
agglomerations account for the majority of energy-related emissions, they also provide significant
opportunities to reduce per capita CO₂ emissions, create a large number of green jobs, and
improve energy efficiency. However, these positive outcomes are only achievable when
infrastructural, institutional, and policy frameworks are properly aligned. The paper concludes
with socio-economic recommendations aimed at maximizing the green potential of urban
agglomerations.
